UNLV shooting: Suspect dead, 3 victims killed, 1 injured victim, police say

LAS VEGAS — A person suspected of opening fire at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Wednesday was found dead as police responded to reports of the shooting, according to authorities.

UNLV-Dayton basketball game canceled

Update 9:32 p.m. EST Dec. 6: UNLV’s basketball game at Dayton Wednesday evening was canceled after the shooting at the university in Las Vegas, according to The Associated Press.

“Due to the tragic events unfolding on UNLV’s campus, tonight’s men’s basketball contest between UNLV and the University of Dayton will not be played. Further information will be released when available. We ask that our fans keep the UNLV community in their thoughts and prayers,” Dayton Basketball said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Police provide evening update

Update 8:16 p.m. EST Dec. 6: Three victims were killed and another was critically injured during the shooting, according to police. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill said in a news conference that the condition of the fourth victim has been upgraded to stable.

Four students were taken to the hospital for panic attacks. Two officers were treated for minor injuries, McMahill said.

The suspect died after a confrontation with officers, the New York Times reported.

The suspect’s name will not be released Wednesday evening due to next of kin notification, McMahill said. Investigators say they do know the suspect’s name though, CNN reported.

“There was a gathering just outside of the building where the students were playing games and eating food,” McMahill said, according to CNN. “There were tables set up for them to play Legos, and if it hadn’t been for the heroic actions of one of those police officers who responded, there could’ve been countless additional lives taken.”

The names of the victims have not been released.

University police said in the news conference that the campus will be closed for the rest of the week and will reopen next week for finals week.

Las Vegas Raiders release statement

Update 7:02 p.m. EST Dec. 6: The Las Vegas Raiders released a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, following the shooting at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.

“The Las Vegas Raiders are deeply saddened by the tragic events that occurred at UNLV today. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and all those affected by this senseless act of violence. We are committed to helping our friends at UNLV and the great Las Vegas community heal and are grateful for the efforts of our first responders,” the team said.

President Biden release statement on shooting

Update 6:55 p.m. EST Dec. 6: “Just hours ago, the University of Nevada at Las Vegas became the latest college campus to be terrorized by a horrific act of gun violence, and the community is still awaiting information on casualties,” President Biden said in a statement.

“Jill and I join citizens across our nation in praying for the families of our fallen, and for those who were injured during these latest acts of senseless violence. We are also grateful for the courageous work of law enforcement—who risked their own safety to bring an end to these deadly shooting sprees. Federal law enforcement officials are on the ground working with State and local law enforcement in both states and I have directed that all necessary support be provided to assist in the investigations and support these communities,” Biden said.

3 killed, 1 injured, police say

Update 6:47 p.m. EST Dec. 6: Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department cnfirimed on X, formerly known as Twitter, that three victims were killed during the shooting Wednesday. One victim is in critical condition at the hospital.

No further information has been released. According to The Associated Press, there is a press conference expected to take place at 5 p.m. PST.

Police say at least 3 victims with unknown injuries

Update 5:05 p.m. EST Dec. 6: Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that there are three victims but their injuries are unknown.

“No more threat to the community. The suspect is deceased. Right now, we know there are 3 victims, but unknown extent of the injuries. That number could change. We will update you when we know more,” McMahill said.

There are victims but no specifics yet

Update 4:40 p.m. EST Dec. 6: Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill said in a news conference Wednesday afternoon that there is no further threat to the community.

McMahill confirmed that there are victims/ The victim count and the extent of injuries have not been released. Information is limited.

There has been no information about the possible motive, McMahill said.

The College of Southern Nevada closed all campuses for the remainder of the day Wednesday, University of Police Services Adam Garcia said in the news conference.

Garcia said that officers found and “engaged” the suspect who is confirmed dead, according to The Associated Press.

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo released a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, following the shooting.

Police ask people to continue to shelter in place after shooting

Update 4:05 p.m. EST Dec. 6: University officials urged people to continue to shelter in place as evacuations on campus continued following Wednesday’s reported shooting.

“Police are evacuating buildings one at a time,” officials said in a social media post.

Original report: Police confirmed a suspect was dead shortly after saying on social media that the shooter was “contained.”

University police said just before noon local time that they were responding to an “active shooter” incident in Beam Hall. Later, officials reported shots fired in the Student Union.

It was not immediately clear how many people were believed to have been injured or if any deaths were reported, though the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said there “appears to be multiple victims.”

“Please avoid the area and we will have more information soon,” the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said in a post on social media.

A UNLV student who identified herself only by her first name, Cate, told KVVU-TV that she was having breakfast outside when she heard a series of loud booms. At first, she said, people didn’t seem to respond.

“Everyone was jut kind of concerned and looking around, and then — boom, everyone’s running,” she said. “I didn’t know what was happening, I was like, ‘I guess we’re all running. I’m running.’”

She said she ran inside and went into a basement, where she took shelter for 20 minutes.

“I was hearing shots outside and I was hearing police, and then the police just evacuated me out,” she said. “I had my hands over my head and yeah, I was just hearing like, a lot of shots. I didn’t know how many shooters there were — I don’t really know anything.”

She told KVVU that at one point, she saw police detain someone.

“I saw them grab a guy and take a big gun, and then I saw them put the guy in the car so I was like, ‘OK, it’s over,’ but then ... (I) heard more rounds after that,” Cate said.
