Mekka died at his home in Newhall, California, and while there was no indication his death was suspicious, it was not made clear how he died, NBC News reported.
After growing up in Massachusetts, Mekka won the role of Carmine, Shirley’s (Cindy Williams) boyfriend on “Laverne & Shirley,”, and remained with the series throughout its eight-season run on ABC, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Mekka and Williams went on to work together in a touring production of “Grease” and “It Had to Be You.” Cindy Williams remembered Mekka on Twitter, describing him as “A world-class talent who could do it all.”
