Specifically, the United States confirmed 11,003,469 COVID-19 cases Sunday, which have resulted in 246,073 deaths to date, according to a tally maintained by Johns Hopkins University.

The most recent virus spike began surging across much of the country in mid-October, the Times reported, noting the nation jumped from eight million cases to nine million cases in just over two weeks, from nine million to 10 million cases in only 10 days and now from 10 million to 11 million cases in only six days.

Meanwhile, the nation recorded its third-highest day of new cases on Saturday with 159,100, raising the 7-day average to more than 145,000, the Times reported.

The United States, with about 4.3% of the world population, accounts for 20% of global COVID-19 cases that reached 54,273,403 early Sunday evening. Meanwhile, total virus-related deaths in the United States are approaching the quarter-of-a-million mark, or roughly 19% of the global 1.3 million fatalities reported to date, Johns Hopkins reported.

India follows most closely behind the United States with 8,814,579 COVID-19 cases, while Brazil’s 5,848,959 cases means those three countries account for nearly half of all global cases.

Eight other countries have reported at least one million cases each, including:

France: 1,915,713 cases, resulting in 42,600 deaths.

Russia: 1,910,149 cases, resulting in 32,885 deaths.

Spain: 1,458,591 cases, resulting in 40,769 deaths.
