LEMONT, Ill. — One person died and another was injured Tuesday in an explosion at a petroleum refinery near Chicago, authorities said.
According to the Will County Sheriff’s Office authorities responded to an explosion at the Seneca Petroleum Company refinery in Lemont on Tuesday morning. Deputies said one person died and another was taken to a hospital with injuries.
The injured person’s condition was not immediately known.
Initial reports indicate that an asphalt tank exploded, downing power lines and causing a fire that authorities were able to extinguish before 11 a.m.
“Fire personnel do not believe that any type of hazmat situation has occurred and there is no danger to the public,” deputies said.
Kathy Hoffmeyer, public information officer for the sheriff’s office, told the Chicago Tribune that the explosion happened around 10 a.m.
Authorities, including officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, were called to the scene.
