Radio contests should be relatively simple. You listen in to your favorite station and score some cash or tickets to a concert, right? Right.
Most of the time...
Here are five misguided radio contests:
Drink Urine for Mötley Crüe Tickets
Yes. You read that right.
Back in 1999, a dj in Las Vegas decided he would make listeners drink a couple ounces of his own urine to win tickets to see Mötley Crüe. Before you ask, yes a listener came in and drank it and yes that dj was fired, shortly after.
The lengths people go to see their favorite bands...
Win a Naked Wedding
Its no secret that weddings can be very expensive. So a radio station in England graciously offered to foot the bill for one of their listeners, back in 2011.
But, there’s a catch. They would have to walk down the aisle nude.
A couple that was dating for eleven years ended up winning. And yes - they walked down the aisle mostly nude. There was a perfectly placed top hat and some see-through clothing involved. We’ll leave it there.
Win a Baby
Infertility is a very common obstacle facing couples around the world. A radio station in Ontario decided they wanted to help. Even though nobody really asked for their help...
Regardless, their “Win a Baby” contest commenced in 2011 - in which one couple would be chosen by listener vote to receive in-vitro fertility (IVF) treatments, a value of around $35,000.
Shockingly (sarcasm) the contest came under fire for commoditizing babies.
Win a Funeral
First off - no, the radio station wasn’t going to kill anyone - just to get that out of the way.
More than 600 people entered the contest at a radio station in Germany to win money to cover their funeral by writing their own epitaph for their gravestone. The lucky winner was the person who produced the most creative adieu. The prize: a check for roughly $4200 that must be used for death insurance.
Win a Divorce
A New Zealand radio station needed a contest for Valentine’s Day 2012. So naturally, they came up with a brilliant idea for a prize: they would take care of all the costs of one lucky couple’s divorce. Provided the breakup occur live on-air, of course.
The listeners that “won” ended up sabotaging the contest and weren’t actually getting a divorce. Par for the course if you ask us.
How about something a little easier with a greater pay-off?
